Overview

This course deals with ethico-moral concepts and principles in the practice of nursing. This will serve as basis for appropriate decision making in varied situations and guide the learner to provide effective, efficient, and safe nursing care. The course also focuses on the main concept related to Code of Ethics for Nurses, the ethical values of nurses and of nurses’ commitments to persons with health-care needs and persons receiving care.

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

1- Define key terms related to health care profession.

2- Explain Ethics, health ethics, professional ethic.

3- Describe the characteristics of professional ethic.

4- Differentiate the ethical theories.

5- Discuss the importance of contracts, wills and mal practice.

Mental skills:

1- Clarify personal and professional values and recognize their impact on decision making and professional behavior.

2- Select a clinically useful ethical decision-making framework that incorporates moral concepts, professional ethics, and law and respects diverse values and beliefs.

3- Identify Ethical Issues and begin to use innovative approaches to problem solving, and providing feedback including criticism and praise.

4- Clarify personal and professional values and recognize their impact on decision 4 making and professional behavior.

5- Describe selected models of care delivery, and compare and contrast the benefits and limitations of each.

Scientific and professional skills:

1- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to create change and attain goals.

2- Apply the Code for Nurses and other professional guidelines to clinical practice.

3- Apply relevant bioethical principles in nursing and health related situations.

4- Enable individuals and families to make quality-of-life and end-of-life decisions and achieve a peaceful death.

5- Appreciate the rights of patient.
